At TellusLabs, our use of satellite imagery often keeps us up above the clouds. Last week, four members of the team embarked on the ProFarmer Crop Tour to get their boots dirty while seeing how crops are doing on the ground. This field-level work is particularly important for us as we are increasingly working with clients to apply our technology at the field-scale.
Matt, Greg, Fernando, and David packed their boots and headed to South Dakota and Ohio before hitting the road. Over four days, they traveled 6,000 km and collected over 300 samples! Some of these samples even made their way back to the office…
As they drove on, we in the office were treated to a steady stream of updates...just check out our Twitter!
At the end of the tour, we put all of these datapoints to good use: We created an interactive map that overlays each team member's crop tour route with ground-sampled estimates and images from the fields visited! Click below to explore.
For two years now, this tour has been a fantastic opportunity for the TellusLabs team to spend time with some of the most knowledgeable people in the industry - including farmers, other producers, market analysts, and journalists. From this group, a clear consensus has emerged that it will be a good season for both corn and soybeans, though there is still uncertainty as to how good.
The state-by-state numbers originally announced at the evening meetings on the tour suggested a yield a good deal lower than the USDA’s August figures. While ProFarmer ultimately published Friday estimates more consistent with the USDA, we are inclined to agree more with their initial state-by-state assessment. Our models continue to indicate yields below the USDA. Just how much lower will be determined in the coming months!
In the meantime, please enjoy our interactive map as you virtually hop in our car and relive the Pro Farmer 2018 Crop Tour with the team!
